SKILLS-O-RAMA

As part of our skills-o-rama task we were to select and upload appropriate pictures. I decided to post pictures from the photographer Sebastiao Salgado, which were featured in the film of his work by the name of 'Salt of the Earth'. Salgardo has witnessed may key points in recent history including; famine and starvation during and as a result of the refugee crisis in Africa, the burning of oil wells and the restoration of the reserves in Kuwait, refugees in Ukraine and devastating genocide. The film, narrated by Salgardo, explains the photographs and Salgardo's experiences in these events first hand. He explains how he was deeply moved and troubled by what he had seen whilst documenting starvations in refugee camps across Africa, this would lead him to take a break before beginning to endeavour in finding the beauty of the world where before he had seen darkness. This film is incredibly moving and has a refreshing frankness about the suffering and injustice of the world. furthermore, going on to emphasis the beauty in the natural world. I picked these images as I feel they hold a strong message and have inspired me greatly, especially with the current refugee crisis. This film has also introduced me to a more creative and almost 'epic' use of cinematography which can be used to encourage emotions such as sympathy and amazement, both of which I experienced through the use of such images in the film.
Here is a short clip of the film narrated by Sebastiao Salgardo himself.
